With Richard being away I had a bit more freedom to travel a little further than normal. I’d planned on doing Millom on New Year’s Day as the second in the Double with Barrow but they couldn’t get the volunteers so I decided to drive the 2 hours and 10 minutes there for my Twixtmas parkrun instead!
Millom parkrun is five laps round the outside of a school playing field, all on grass. It has a reputation for being one of the toughest routes and I can see why! The soft ground and the mud makes it really hard to pick up any speed or momentum, and it really saps the strength from your legs. Expect to add at least three minutes onto your normal parkrun time!
Afterwards there is a hosepipe available to clean off your legs and shoes before entering the cafe. Most people still leave their shoes outside (I changed into a fresh pair), and the cafe seats still have covers on them to protect them from the mud.
The cafe is run by volunteers from the running club, and everything is £1 each – tea, coffee, cake!
