Notes

I started and ended in Newsham Park. Opened in 1868, it was the first solo design project for Edward Kemp, understudy of Joseph Paxton who designed Birkenhead Park and the grounds of Chatsworth House. The park used to have two railway stations on the Canada Dock line – Stanley Station was at the south east corner on Prescot Road, and Tue Brook Station was in the north east corner on West Derby Road.

There’s a bandstand just off Prospect Way. The kids were in residence and I could hear their music – it wasn’t brass band music.

Every so often I’ll spot a sign giving a name to a terrace of houses. Lorne Terrace (1871) is only three houses joined together so technically it is a terrace, but it does feel like cheating!

ISC Social Club on Prescot Road became abandoned after a fire last year. Thanks to Ian Warburton who pointed out ISC stands for International Social Club.

I stopped to take a photo at Callander Road for my friend Chris Callander.

One of the signs for Onlsow Road has ‘Elm Park’ under the name of the road. After a little digging it seems that Elm Park is the name of this area between Sheil Road, Prescot Road and Newsham Park.

Radstock Road has two terraces with distinctive dark and light chequered brickwork.

Castle Lodge Guest House has a turret.

Lister Fisheries and Pet Centre is found inside the former Lister Drive Baths (public swimming pool). It’s rather eerie inside as it still has many of the original features. It reminds me of Picton Road Baths where we used to go swimming as kids.

Newsham Park Birthday Woodland is so overgrown you can’t even get to the information board. I wonder what birthday it was created for.
