Notes

For those of you not from the UK, or anyone too young to remember, Brookside was a Channel 4 soap opera. It was made by Mersey Television (now Lime Pictures) and created by Phil Redmond (Hollyoaks, Grange Hill) and ran from 1982 to 2003. The show is famous for its gritty storylines including incest, murder (body under the patio), the first openly gay TV character, and the first pre-watershed lesbian kiss. ‘Brookie’ was set in a real close of brand new houses north of West Derby and was a stepping stone for actors Sue Johnstone, Ricky Tomlinson, Amanda Burton, Anna Friel, and Philip Olivier, plus writer Jimmy McGovern. Redmond bought all of the houses, used 5 for filming, and the rest for admin, makeup, catering, etc. When the programme ended the houses were sold to a developer who refurbished them before selling them on.

Brookside is actually next to a brook. Technically it’s a river (River Alt) but it’s close enough!

Woodhaven Close and Old Kennel Close are PRIVATE with big gates to prove it.

The sign for 6 Oak Close isn’t OA-K.

I passed one of the many entrances to the Croxteth Hall estate.

On one side of Coachmans Drive there is a flock of bird names – Chaffinch Close, Kingfisher Grove, Lapwing Close, and Woodpecker Close. On the other side there are some river themed roads – Riverside, Delta Drive, The Meander, and Oxbow Road. Some of the older streets in this area don’t have pedestrian pavements (sidewalks).

I’ll certainly take a look inside Mabb Lane Community Woodland when I return to do the surrounding streets.

Fur Close isn’t on OpenStreetMap so I’ve added it.

On Princess Drive the only sign that there used to be a pub there is literally the post for the sign.
