Notes

This morning’s run was part of the Virtual Purple Wave, the University of Manchester’s virtual Great Manchester Run, so naturally I did it around Anfield Stadium!

Anfield Stadium is surrounded on two sides by terraced streets. Anfield Road runs behind it (with Stanley Park beyond) and Walton Breck Road is at the front.

There’s something quite special about running down one of the terraced streets and seeing a glimpse of the stadium at the far end. There has been quite a bit of improvement work at the end of some of the streets to the west of the stadium. Blessington Road wasn’t particularly nice when I ran it in May 2019, but it looks much better now. In this same area Bagnall Street and Baltic Street are both on all of the maps even though they no longer exist.

Across the other side or Walton Breck Road immediately opposite the stadium a new housing estate is taking shape.

96 Anfield Road has a red door. Naturally!

It’s funny to see a sign saying ‘All ball games prohibited’ in the shadow of the stadium!

The houses in Tancred Road have small structures outside with a door. I can only assume these were originally for coal deliveries.

There are quite a few murals on the sides of buildings around Anfield. The Trent Alexander-Arnold one on Sybil Road is truly awesome!

The section of Anfield Road behind the stadium is due to be taken over by the next phase of expansion.

96 Avenue and Paisley Square are official street addresses.

The Arc Hotel only opened last week. One of the owners was outside cleaning but didn’t want to pose for a photo. She did allow me to pop inside and take a picture of the replica Premier League and European Champions League trophies in the window! They’ve got a brand new mural on the side of the building too.

Holy pub, Batman! The Church is a pub in a converted church.

Found a purple house for the Purple Wave!

The old Police Station is a grand building. It has ‘Liverpool City Police’ at the top.

Every so often I’ll come across evidence of former businesses on terraced streets. I can’t find any information at all online about Finchley Dairy (1907). Hornsey Road has a double wooden door. I wonder what this used to be.

Anfield Road Primary School is a huge Victorian building from 1886. The separate entrances for Boys, Girls and Infants are still visible.
