Notes

These are the closest roads to my house that I’d not run yet. I was saving them for a Wednesday after work run, but even finishing at 4pm and with the extra hour it was still dark by the time I’d finished.I started on Botanic Road, with grand, three-storey terrace on one side and Botanic Park on the other. The old Littlewoods building is just the other side.

George V was the first George to have letterboxes so his only have GR on them. George VI has GR VI.

In the estate behind Botanic Road there are roads and closes, but there are also a number of pedestrian streets. These are walkways with houses fronting onto them. Many of them haven’t been added to OpenStreetMap properly or at all, so it’s been fun to run down pedestrian streets that I’ve actually contributed to the map.

An old church on Durning Road is now flats. From what I can gather this used to be Durning Road United Methodist Free Church.

The whole area bounded by Edge Lane to the north, Wavertree Road to the south, Marmaduke Street to the west, and Durning Road to the west used to be terraced streets like the one I live in. A number of years back these were demolished to make way for a new estate (known as Williamson Place) with a mixture of different types and sizes of houses. I really like how they’ve recognised some of the old street names. Dorothy Street is no more, but Dorothy Drive is there. The same for Winifred Street and Winifred Drive. I think Wayne Richardson used to live in Dorothy Street!

Back Towerlands Street is still an official street but the iron gate means the public no longer has access. Back Irvine Street runs behind Irvine Street and Edge Lane. It would originally have been a back street, but has since been relegated to the status of an alley. The same goes for Back Holland Place.

The old Fire and Police Station is still there on Durning Road, with its wide front entrance for the single, old-fashioned fire engine. The original building is built from sandstone, and the extension tagged onto the side of it is brick-built.
