Notes

This afternoon I had planned to visit Gillmoss, and then I saw a tweet about how it was the last day that Liverpool Football Club will be training at Mellwood – so I just had to visit and take a photo! Mellwood has been Liverpool’s training ground since the 1950s, but it was recently sold to Torus to build affordable housing. Training will move to The Academy, an integrated training facility in Kirkby which already hosts the club’s youth and development teams.

Generations of football fans have waited outside Mellwood for players and managers to arrive in the hope that they can get a smile and an autograph. The signs at the front entrance politely tell us that players aren’t allowed to stop any more due to safety concerns. In recent years high fences have been erected around the entire perimeter to stop people from watching the training sessions, although there are still the odd building block leaning against the wall for someone to stand on and peer over the top of the fence. Signs inform you that you’re not allowed to take photos or video without the club’s permission.

There’s a new housing development off Deysbrook Lane called The Point. I don’t know what the point is of the name. Appropriately for Remembrance Sunday all of the roads had military names – Brigadier Drive, Cavalry Close, Colonel Drive, Corporal Way, General Drive, Grenadier Drive, Lancer Way, Regiment Way, Sergeant Road, and Trooper Close. I’m just disappointed there wasn’t a Private Road! UPDATE: Thanks to Margaret Roberts who pointed out that Deysbrook Army Barracks used to be on the site, hence the military names.

There’s a row of three old cottages remaining on Deysbrook Lane immediately opposite the modern Tesco. St Timothy’s Catholic Church is in the estate behind it, and looks more like a silo or a barn from the outside.
