Notes

Last year I took part in the first Manchester 24 Hour Run Against Homelessness. I caught the first train to Manchester (5.35am), ran from Deansgate to the Students’ Union, then ran four of the 30 minute 5km loops. In total I ran a half marathon before breakfast!

This year the event took place virtually. It still had people running 5km loops but that was limited to Run Wild run leaders. Everyone else was asked to do their own runs and walks and to log them on the website.

So this morning I got up super early and headed out to Netherley to run 10km while marking off some more streets. I took a selfie and for some reason my eyes are closed…

There’s something really special about running early morning before the sun rises and the world starts moving. It was cloudy so I didn’t get any fantastic sunrise photos, but I did experience the sky turning from night into day.

Netherley is an older out of town housing estate with a couple of newer development thrown in. I used to know it as the terminus for the 79 bus to town. There is a group of roads named after birds – osprey, glebe, kingfisher, dunlin, wheatear and more. There’s a Blue Jay Close which I couldn’t help wishing had been named Blue Jay Way instead.

There’s a group of roads named after places in Canada – Winnipeg, Superior, Ontario, Vancouver, Montreal.

Everything was going well until I got to the section of the estate off Winster Drive (all roads named after places in Cumbria – Selside, Mardale, Winster, Egremont, Scafell, Appleby) where I realised that most of the pedestrian streets were missing from my paper map. Rather than blundering around and probably missing some I decided to leave it for now. When I get the chance I’ll update OpenStreetMap and add all of the missing addresses then wait until they’re added to CityStrides before returning to knock them off.
