Notes

For those of you wondering about the title, Ilha Formosa is the old, Portuguese name for Taiwan and translates as ‘beautiful island’.

This estate off Longmoor Lane has the ovular Formosa Drive in the centre surrounding the obligatory primary school. There’s also the obligatory Church of England church.

The area has some epic street names – who wouldn’t want to live in Gribble Road? And you can probably guess what Blueberry Fields is inspired by.

Falcon Hey is joined by Eagle Dean, Kestrel Dean and the newly built (it’s not on Google Street View yet!) Tawny Close.

I crossed Fazakerley Brook just upstream of the point where it flows into the River Alt.

I ran past Aintree University Hospital. There are road on the hospital grounds (as there are for other hospitals in Liverpool) but I think I’m going to wait until well into next year to collect them.

Fazakerley Memorial Hall makes extra cash by using their carpark for hospital parking during the day.

Further up Lower Lane is Fazakerley Methodist Church. The building next to it which was originally the church hall is now a nursery. How many other churches have sold off neighbouring buildings because the congregations can no longer support them? How many churches have actually closed the main church building due to lack of numbers? Childwall Valley Methodist, Stoneycroft Methodist, and Aigburth Methodist spring to mind.

With CityStrides (the site I use to log my progress) a street is only marked as ‘complete’ if all of the roads with the same name have been completed. I discovered this after running Moss Pits Lane in Childwall and wondering why it hadn’t marked as complete. Today I ran its counterpart. This means, however, that the total number of streets in Liverpool, as shown on CityStrides, isn’t accurate and is actually higher when all of the duplicate (and in some cases triplicate) roads are counted.

The sign for Christies is missing an i. Does that make it half blind?

Holy Name Catholic Church is striking with its protruding columns and bell tower.

Kelvington Close has houses on one side only. So, the question is… why didn’t the company that built them number them 1, 2, 3, 4, etc? Instead they’re numbered 2, 4, 6, 8, etc. Why??? One of the houses had the doors to the gas and electric meters wide open. I’m not sure getting heavy rain in them is a good idea.

I snapped a pic of a van for LETS FRESH because it made me so angry(?). Even if the apostrophe wasn’t missing LET’S FRESH still doesn’t make sense. In fact, it’s a brazen assault on the English language for which there really should be a suitable punishment available. Other opinions are available!

On the corner of Longmoor Land and Copple House Lane there’s the remains of an old signpost. Originally it would have had place names at the top pointing in their direction. Now it’s just a post.
