Notes

I ran down First Avenue, Second Avenue, Third Avenue, Fourth Avenue, Fifth Avenue, Sixth Avenue, and Seventh Avenue. It was only as I was running along Seventh Avenue that it dawned on me that someone lives at 7 Seventh Avenue (I took a photo!), and 6 Sixth Avenue, and 5 Fifth Avenue, and 4 Fourth Avenue, and 3 Third Avenue, and 2 Second Avenue, and 1 First Avenue!

Longmoor Grove is on the map as a road, although the sign at the Longmoor Lane end says there’s no entry for cars or motorbikes.

Long Avenue couldn’t have been much shorter…!

Hartley’s Village is a small group of houses built for key workers at the WP Hartley jam factory. The square behind the houses had gardens, tennis courts and bowling greens. The roads were originally tree-lined avenues named after jam-making ingredients – Sugar Street, Spice Lane, Cherry Avenue.

The factory was built in 1886 and some of the buildings, including the chimney, are still standing. On Hartley Avenue there are three Grade II listed buildings available to buy, including the Dining Hall built in 1895. You can read more about the Conservation Area on the Historic England website.
