Druids Cross Road is a continuation of Woolton Hill Road and runs down to Menlove Avenue. It’s at this point where the Calder Stones were originally discovered as part of a neolithic burial chamber. The stones were moved to the Harthill Estate (now Calderstones Park) where for many years they were hidden inside a greenhouse. In 2019 they were moved and put on display inside the Manor House when The Reader Organisation moved in.
St Catherine’s Orphanage for Roman Catholic Girls once occupied the land where Druids Park is now. It was originally a private residence, then from 1916 to 1919 a Reformatory for Girls, then Druid’s Cross Military Hospital for a short time. When it was demolished The Lodge remained, as did the stables and a cottage. There are also some sections of the original walls still visible.
On Stonecrop (what a fantastic road name) there are two majestic Taiwanese photinia trees that I just had to take a photo of. Everywhere there are signs of spring.
There’s a Teasville Road, but no Coffee Lane or Hot Chocolate Way.
There’s a sculpture on the front of Eton Park flats. I stood staring at it for ages trying to work out what it said. I eventually decided it didn’t say anything and was just shapes that resemble letters.
On Woolton Road there’s a faded sign for the long gone Good Shepherd Convent with Eton Lodge and St Martins.
