HM Prison Liverpool was originally known as Walton Gaol, and is still referred to locally as Walton Jail. It’s located on Hornby Road, named after Thomas Dyson Hornby, chairman of the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board. Hornby Dock was named after him too.
Completed in 1855 Walton Gaol replaced the old Borough Gaol at the Leeds Street end of Great Howard Street (see the 1836 map). 22 prisoners were killed in September 1940 when one wing of the prison was hit by German bombs. It took 11 years to clear all the rubble and find the last of the bodies.
The final execution at Walton was in 1964, 15 months before the death sentence was abolished.
Notable former prisoners include suffragette Lady Constance Bulwer-Lytton, Robert Tressell (author of The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists), Akinwale Arobieke (the locally infamous Purple Aki), and Charles Bronson who was described at the time as Britain’s most notorious prisoner.
On Hornby Lane there’s a gate with a chicken motif at a side entrance to Walton Park Cemetery. I mean, what the cluck???
The Walton Institute (1878) was built at the end of a row of terraced houses on Sefton Street. It’s now apartments. Institutes were commonly set up and funded by wealthy donors. They were created as venues for education and public meetings, with many incorporating reading rooms to make learning more accessible to the poorer levels of society.
My run took me over the border into Sefton where I photographed an old cast iron lamp post without a light on top (unfortunately) and Keir Hardie Avenue.
Victoria Drive and Albert Drive are next to each other. The newer section of Victoria Drive from the junction with Albert was built on Orrell Park, the park that gave the area its name.
Devonfield Road is a Victorian terraced street complete with Queen Victoria postbox.
