20 Forthlin Road is the childhood home of Paul McCartney. It was built in 1949, and the McCartney family moved in in 1955 when Paul was in secondary school. It was also the childhood home of Mike McCartney, Paul’s brother, who made his name as a member of the group The Scaffold. 20 Forthlin Road has been owned by the National Trust since 1995. Unlike Mendips, John Lennon’s childhood home on Menlove Avenue, the Forthlin Road property doesn’t have an English Heritage blue plaque because Macca hasn’t been dead for 20 years or reached the age of 100. Let’s hope it’s the latter!
What’s noticeable about Forthlin Road is the fact that it’s the only street in the whole neighbourhood that’s had new pavements (sidewalks) fitted. The council obviously wants to make a good impression with the tourists.
Booker Avenue School is noticeable (or not noticeable) by the fact that it’s hidden behind the residential houses on Booker Avenue. Looking at a 1946 map there was a school here before the houses were built, although not the same buildings. The 1904 map shows a school here on Booker’s Lane, back when Robin Hood’s Stone was still in the middle of a field.
Merseyside Police’s Dogs and Mounted Section has a sign on the gate – “NO BALLS TO BE KICKED”. Is that because they don’t want the dogs to chase them?
At the end of Appletree Close there are two houses built on a triangle of land, with the front paths converging at the garages at the sharp end.
Westwood Road, another Robin Hood inspired name?
Bridge Chapel on Heath Road used to be a school but is now home to a church, food bank, nursery, cafe, and advice centre.
Maggies Florists is screaming out for an apostrophe!
Returning to the junction of Booker Avenue and Mather Avenue I took a photo of the Jewish care home on the site where the synagogue used to be.
