This run should have been the whole of Walton Village but I did that thing I’ve not done for a long time – I forgot to start the run on my watch. I reckon I was 4km in before I realised, and after running down 4km worth of streets for the second time I ran out of time and enthusiasm to complete the whole of the planned route.
Walton Village is an old settlement, with records dating it from the death of Edward the Confessor in 1066. I found a cypher-less letterbox and a George V.
It’s great to see the sign for Walton Dairy still exists and is in a good state of repair. There were lots of other buildings along the route that must have had an original purpose which only a local historian would be able to tell me about. The most curious example is at the end of Mandeville Road where a three storey, red-bricked building stands with a large door for vehicular access. I’ve searched the Internet and historic maps and can’t find any reference to it at all.
The Glebe Hotel on County Road with its limestone bricks and corner turret is really striking!
Delf Lane is an actual road, although I’m not sure any cars actually use it as it’s only wide enough for one car. It runs from Queens Drive, alongside Alsop High School, and past the end of three ‘dead end’ streets in a section which would normally just be an alley.
The New Harlequin Dance Club is a dance school occupying a sizeable space about a row of shops.
The parish church of St Mary the Virgin is quite striking with its green copper roof.
