#everysinglestreet [22/04/21] Allerton Priory and the end of Allerton Road

This section of Heath Road is a duel carriageway with a really wide central reservation in the centre.

Off one side there are new houses where New Heyes School used to be that have a really cool retro design with wood effect front doors and garages. The adjoining road road Winterhill Road has larger, more expensive houses. The one I photographed is 5 bedrooms and is on sale for £1,175,000.

I know it’s not one of the streets I have to run, but I’m so going to run down the length of the bridleway that runs from Allerton Road, past the golf course to Menlove Avenue.

Found at the end of a private road called Ye Priory Court with its quaint gate lodge, Allerton Priory was built as Allerton Lodge in the early 1800s for Liverpool merchant William Rutson. In 1866 colliery owner John Grant Morris bought the estate and commissioned architect Alfred Waterhouse (who designed Manchester Town Hall and London’s Natural History Museum) to rebuild the house.

In 1897 the building became a Magdelen Asylum run by nuns providing refuge for unmarried Irish girls. In 1915 the Sisters established “Allerton Priory Special Industrial School for mentally defective girls under 15”.

The school closed in 1933 and the nuns remained until 1986. It was converted into a nursing home and is now luxury housing, for example this £460,000 2 bed flat over three floors, including a top floor study at the top of a tower, with a walkway out onto a roof garden. https://www.zoopla.co.uk/for-sale/details/57037648/?search_identifier=5487278481d6b00ab162422e129cb815

On the land between Allerton Road and Woolton Road there’s a new estate being built. Hats off to the developers Redrow who’ve taken a chunk out of the sandstone wall to accommodate the new road, and have curved the wall round to meet a new sandstone gatepost.

Talking of Allerton Road and Woolton Road, why are there two roads with the same name so close to each other? There’s another Woolton Road and Allerton Road in Woolton.

Great North Run

I’m running the Great North Run for the first time on Sunday 12th September, raising money for Alzheimer’s Research UK. My mum has Alzheimers so this charity is close to my heart. If you can spare a couple of quid to help me reach my target I would be extremely grateful.
