#everysinglestreet [25/04/21] Speke: Part 2 – The ghosts of North and South Parade

For my second run of the weekend I returned to Speke. I’ve talked previously about how Speke was developed over time, including the tower blocks and maisonettes that have since been demolished. There’s now a shopping park with a large Morrison’s supermarket as the anchor tenant. This replaced the parade.

In the middle of Speke between Central Avenue and Central Way was the parade. This was a lozenge-shaped plot of land with a one-way road running round the entire circumference. The road round the north side was North Parade, and South Parade was round the south side. A pedestrian areas connecting north and south was called Central Parade.

From the few times I visited (many years before the shops all closed down and it was demolished) I just remember it being overwhelmingly depressing. North Parade (the road) has since been closed, with only a short stub by the police station remaining. I’ve included a photo of South Parade and Central Parade from 13 years ago, before demolition.

I found Holland Road. Photos were taken.

I think the changes in the use of buildings is interesting. On Ganworth Road a church building is now home to a Christian care charity, while the pub at the end of Central Way is now Speke Baptist Church.

Renaissance Way isn’t as interesting as the name would suggest…. Although I did pass the AstraZeneca plant again!

I’ve now completed two thirds of Speke Boulevard.

Great North Run

I’m running the Great North Run for the first time on Sunday 12th September, raising money for Alzheimer’s Research UK. My mum has Alzheimers so this charity is close to my heart. If you can spare a couple of quid to help me reach my target I would be extremely grateful.
