I did part of St Michael back on 25th October so it was good to finish it.
I started on St Michaels Church Road where the church of St Michael-in-the-Hamlet stands. This is a Grade I listed building made in 1813 from cast iron by John Cragg, owner of the Mersey Iron Foundry.
There are four cul-de-sacs – Sunbourne Road, Springbourne Road, Windboure Road and Rosebourne Close – running between St Michaels Church Road and the railway line. There was a pleasant surprise at the end of Windbourne in the form of Windbourne Gardens, a plot of land between the end of the houses and the railway that has been reclaimed and transformed into a little refuge of tranquility. There are plants, trees, chairs, a bench, planters for growing vegetables, and a fire pit.
There’s another unnamed green space between Fulwood Drive and the footpath alongside Galbraith Close. The gates at each end are locked at night, but during the day it’s a pleasant woodland path hidden away from the traffic on Aigburth Road.
There’s a short section of Ashbourne Road where the original terraced houses have been replaced by modern ones. It makes me wonder why something like this happens. A little further down there are two houses that are larger than the rest of the houses on the street. I’ve already mentioned this before, where one or two larger houses are built specially for the builder or building supervisors. One of these houses – No 92 – has had a facelift, with the entire red brick front age covered in plaster.
Fulwood Park is another private estate similar to Cressington Park and Grassendale Park. The sign on the gate post tells visitors that the road is private, and signs along the drive forbid all on-road parking. Unlike the lodges at the entrance to Cressington and Grassendale parks, Fulwood Park Lodge wasn’t built for the park. It was the lodge house for the farm that used to occupy this land and which was demolished to make way for the park.
Like Cressington and Grassendale, Fulwood Park has a selection of original, old houses and modern houses. Fulwood Close and Riverside View have been built where single houses used to stand.

I’m running the Great North Run for the first time on Sunday 12th September, raising money for Alzheimer’s Research UK. My mum has Alzheimers so this charity is close to my heart. If you can spare a couple of quid to help me reach my target I would be extremely grateful.
