One time president of the Institution of Civil Engineers, Brodie was responsible for Queens Drive (the UK’s first city ring road), the Queensway Mersey Tunnel (the world’s longest underwater road tunnel at the time), and perhaps his finest achievement, the football goal net!

I ran down Shirley Road (cue Airplane quote “Shirley you can’t be serious”).

Like my visit to Yewtree Road last week, Aigburth Hall Avenue is also a trip down memory lane for me as this was also on the route to Grandma’s house. There’s a central reservation at the junction with Aigburth Road and the standing stones are imprinted in my memory.

On the other side of the central reservation is the Grade II listed Stanlawe Grange, thought to be the oldest building in Liverpool. Originally the grange for Stanlaw Abbey, the building has been expanded and rebuilt over the years with little of the original building remaining. The oldest historical record of the building is dated 1292, although it could well have been older than that.

I passed a fuchsia bush just near the nursery. I took a photo because, like the standing stone, this also reminded me of trips to see my Grandma. She had a fuchsia in her front garden and me and my sisters used to have great fun popping the flower pods!

I ventured along the drive for Holmefield House, part of Liverpool John Moores University’s IM Marsh campus. The University has sold the site and will be leaving in July. It was founded in 1900 by Irene Mabel Marsh as a PE teacher training college for girls. It was briefly part of the University of Liverpool, before moving to Liverpool Polytechnic which eventually became LJMU. The plan is to build 200 new homes on the site, along with public open space. Holmefield House will be converted back into accommodation. You can read all about it here.

Stats

Wednesday 9th June 2021

20 streets
Aigburth Hall Avenue, Aigburth Hall Road, Booker Avenue, Cooper Close, Eastcote Road, Glenhead Road, Glenluce Road, Hallside Close, Holmefield Avenue, Holmefield Road, Kirkmaiden Road, Lanville Road, Lochryan Road, Lynton Close, Oakland Road, Oldfield Road, Shipton Close, Shirley Road, South Sudley Road, Stairhaven Road

Total: 4,035 (71.06%)

Remaining: 1,643

Photos on Facebook

All of the photos from this run are in a publically viewable Facebook album.

To view them click here.

Twitter

Follow @itsafrogslife

#everysinglestreet [09/06/22] Aigburth Hall Avenue and Liverpool’s oldest building@CityStrides #EveryStreetInLiverpool #runeverystreet

Today: 20 streets
Total: 4,035 (71.06%)
Remaining: 1,643https://t.co/oYoP983sCN

For commentary and more pics visit https://t.co/t00tpUQrh1 pic.twitter.com/NXdVz9CFqt
—
